On the nature trail there are no birds in the bird house in the winter. It is peaceful and quiet. It’s a lovely path to walk on but it is hard to walk with all the branches on the ground. The wind blows them down.

Golden Valley
I went on the nature and I found a bunch of golden leaves! I can actually tell you some facts about leaves so are you with me? Okay let’s go! Don’t you know why leaves change colors? It’s because the leaves are dying. When a leaf is alive it’s green and when it’s dead it’s brown. Some leaves are awfully large! Didn’t you know that leaves even had relatives! Did you know that leaves were here before dinosaurs? Wow leaves are really interesting!
The Downy Woodpecker
On the nature trail I saw a tree with holes. They were woodpecker holes! It was from the Downy Woodpecker because they live in our area. They are a common breed of woodpecker in our area. They are about 5 in. and 3/4. Males have a red spot on their head, females do not. In the winter they often visit feeding stations for food. You can identify them by the white stripe on their back. Now you know about the Downy Woodpecker.

Queen Anne’s Lace
I saw a Queen Anne’s Lace on the Nature Trail. A Queen Anne’s Lace contains clusters of tiny cream-white flowers on the top. It is 1-3 feet tall. The clusters can be from 3-5 inches wide. The leaves are 2-8 inches long, and look like ferns. They can show up in dry fields and waste places. The Queen Anne’s Lace is the ancestor of the Garden Carrot. I wonder why it is called Queen Anne’s Lace?
