I saw nuts

I saw a nut lying on a rock so I took a picture of it and showed it to my teacher. She said it was a Shagbark Hickory nut. It was cracked open so maybe  a squirrel ate it. The bark on the tree looks shaggy. Also Shagbark hickory  trees can grow to be 100 feet tall!

Holes

I found this hole in November. It was not very big but not that small. I found the hole in a tree trunk. It could have belonged to an animal… mouse, rat, could have even been a squirrel, skunk or chipmunk. Something is still in there. So you see that’s why holes are important.

Bird houses

On the nature walk I saw a bunch of bird houses. I think I saw about eight bird houses. They were all in different places. They were all in a tree. Some were up high in a tree and some were down low in a tree. I wish I new what kind of birds lived in the bird houses.

Ice storm damage

One day in the middle of December, was the ice storm of 08. It was fierce. Thousands of people lost power for days. Trees were cracked, crushed and demolished. It was terrible. Bird houses were breaking, some weren’t. Hopefully all the animals survived. It was one of the worst storms in New England. The Abbot nature trail was much more different than in the Fall because there were lots of broken trees and tree limbs.
