Blue Berries!
On the nature walk I saw blue berries! Some of them were just growing. The high bushes can grow up to 12 feet tall. Also, the short blueberry shrubs grow from 1 to 3 feet tall! Blueberry flowers start blooming in the spring. Many, many animals like to eat blueberries like foxes, deer, bears, opossums, bluebirds, cranes, chipmunks, squirrels and more. Blueberries usually grow in small clusters. Blueberries are blue and round. Also, they ripen in July and August. Some blueberry leaves are dark green with very narrow oval leaves from 1 to 3 inches long. Others are shiny light green less than 1 inch long and are very thin. Also, this fruit is the size of a pea.
Late Goldenrods
Goldenrod blooms in an arch along the upper side of a short branch. Late Goldenrods grow on a smooth, straight, purplish green stem that can be as big as 8 feet tall! Flies, skippers and other butterflies like the flowers. Prairie chickens, rats and rabbits eat the leaves.
The Abbot Nature Trail
On Friday we went on a nature trail. We saw a Touch-me-not. If you touch it it will turn into a spiral. Then we went back further and we saw more Touch-me-nots. They have yellow flowers attached to them . I touched like 100 of them. They are cool! They look like a pea pod. They are also called Jewelweeds. I love that name for a flower! They like the wet soil to grow in.
The Blue berry
On the nature trail I saw a bright blue berry next to some vines. The berry was all alone. I wish I had a camera.
Bushy Asters
I saw a Bushy Aster. They were white and yellow in the middle. They had a green stem and it was in a circle shape. Bushy Asters grow in moist areas. Bushy Asters have heavy leaves. Some people have heard of other Asters. This species of Aster is also found in southern states and around the Great Lakes.
Pokeberries
When the poke berries sprout into the world they will grow to 4 to 12 feet. The birds will eat the berries for a meal. Poke berries have a red stem and odd berries. Their berries are black.
Maple Tree
On the Nature Trail I saw a Maple Tree and saw it was pretty tall. It grew red maple leaves, orange, yellow, brown and so on. They were really bright colors. They were at the beginning of the nature trail. I also saw Touch-Me-Nots. They explode when you brush against them. They are also called Jewelweed.
